Ibn Qayyim on How We Spend Our Day

January 19, 2009

Ibn al-Qayyim [rahimahullah] said,

When a person spends his entire day with no other concern but Allaah alone,

  • Allaah [subhaa nahu wa ta’ala] will take care of all his needs and take care of all that is worrying him.
  • He will empty his heart so that it will be filled only with love for Him, free his tongue so that it will speak only in remembrance of Him [dhikr], and cause all his faculties to work only in obedience to Him.

But when a person spends his entire day with no other concern but this world,

  • Allaah will make him bear its distress, anxiety and pain.
  • He will leave him to sort himself out, and cause his heart to be distracted from the love of Allaah towards the love of some created being.
  • He will cause his tongue to speak only in remembering people instead of remembering Allaah.
  • He will cause him to use his talents and energy in obeying and serving the people.
  • This person will strive hard, laboring like some work-animal, to serve something other than Allaah.

Everyone who turns away from being a true slave of Allaah by obeying and loving Him, will be burdened with servitude to some created being. Allaah says in the Qur’an [interpretation of the meaning]:

And whosoever turns away [blinds himself] from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent, We appoint for him a shaytaan to be his Qareen [intimate companion]. (Sura al-Zukhruf, Ayah 36).

It was narrated that Anas [radi Allaahu anhu] said that the Prophet [sallal laahu alaihi wa sallam] said:

Whoever is mainly concerned about the Hereafter, Allaah will make him feel independent of others and will make him focused and content, and his worldly affairs will fall into place.  But whoever is mainly concerned with this world, Allaah will make him feel in constant need of others and will make him distracted and unfocused, and he will get nothing of this world except what is decreed for him.  (narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 2389 and classed as Saheeh by Shaykh Muhammad Naasiruddin al-Albaani [rahimahullah])

This is definately an important reminder. But does than mean one should not work hard at all, when one can? I thought there needed to be a balance and moderation with deen and dunya.

  2. Assalam Alaikum Sr. Saba,

We should definitely work hard at all times and make use of our time, insh’Allah. However, we should always strive for the Hereafter and that involves making use of our present time as stated above. Insh’Allah, we can work hard and achieve a solid balance between this life and Hereafter. May Allah (SWT) grant us all success. Ameen.

Ibn al-Qayyim is right. I’ve noticed this too. It’s is hard to do. Letting go and just saying Allah is the provider of all things and not worrying about anything. They say if you write down “Only Allah is the provider of all things, nothing in the outside world is the provider of things” every day for 40 days along with a little charity given everyday- even if it’s a dollar, your financial luck will completely and absolutely change.

Asslam o Alaikum!! to All Muslims. Yes this Post is 100% True..as you have also mentioned it in Ahadees And Ayaat Of Qur`an e Kareem.. when we are not even born and we are still in our Mother`s Womb, All the Rizq( Food & water) are written in our Taqdeer(fate), therefore it would be funny and ridiculous if we hope to be like a Millionear and a wealthy person. and also it would be ridiculous to worry about our Future Expenditure and Rizq..because Allah has already written what we will get in our Whole Life Time…So Obviously we should think 90% about Hereafter(Akhirat) and just 10% about this World..as it is also mentioned in Quran and ahaadess of Prophet Muhammad (saw)…Just keep in mind that Time when our Souls will Depart from our bodies and we will taste the Death..at that time evry thing about our actions and deeds in a Book (amalnama) will be closed and it will be locked till the Day Of judgement…May Allah protect us(true Muslims) From the Terror Of Grave and also the Fitnah of Dajjal and also the fire of the Hell and the Fitnah`s of the Life and Death…Ameen !! Ya Rab-ul-Aalameen………..please pray to me you All who read this ..i m a sinful muslim but i Thank Allah that he has created me as a Muslim not kaafir….Shukran Ya Rab…
